There’s been some progress on Avalon’s north end beach access — and an updated timeline for the full beach sand backpassing project.
As of Friday, May 16, Avalon’s Department of Public Works has reopened the beach paths at both 14th and 15th Streets. However, access points at 10th and 11th Streets will remain closed through Memorial Day Weekend due to a lack of sand needed to create temporary paths. Residents and guests in those areas are encouraged to use the dune path and access the beach one block in either direction.
Project Timeline & Logistics
The north end sand backpassing project — awarded to Schiavone Construction — was originally scheduled to begin in April but was delayed due to emergency bridge repairs on Avalon Boulevard. The County expects work on the bridge to wrap by Tuesday, May 27. Equipment mobilization is now set for Wednesday, May 28.
Key updates:
- Beach fill work begins Wednesday, May 28
- Night work only — equipment will operate between 10pm–8am Monday through Friday
- All beach access paths will be cleared by 8am daily
- No weekend work
- Project will conclude before July 4th Weekend
Work will focus on moving sand from the borrow area between 32nd and 40th Streets to the eroded north end beaches (9th–15th Streets). Expect restricted access in that zone during overnight hours.
What This Means For You
Whether you're visiting for Memorial Day or live here year-round, please note that some early morning beach access may be limited due to overnight work. The project is on schedule to restore sand to the north end in time for peak season — just not in time for Memorial Day Weekend.

Bay Park Marina Update
Schiavone Construction’s subcontractor delivered a large crane to the marina on Thursday, May 15 to begin removal of the coffer dam around the new boat ramp — a process expected to take two days. While ongoing bridge repairs prevent delivery of larger paving equipment, a subcontractor will begin paving the marina parking lot on Monday and Tuesday, with striping to follow on Wednesday, May 21.
The southern kayak racks are expected to be in place on Thursday, May 22, and the marina and its boat ramp are on track to open by Thursday or Friday, May 22/23 — just in time for Memorial Day Weekend.
