Avalon Beach Replenishment Work Begins Monday

Avalon Beach Replenishment Work Begins Monday

Avalon's beach replenishment project is officially underway starting Monday, June 9, following the completion of emergency bridge repairs. Heavy equipment will arrive via Avalon Boulevard, and sand backpassing operations will begin overnight between 10pm and 8am on weekdays. Beach access from 9th Street to just south of the Fishing Pier will be restricted during these hours. Full details inside.

After several delays, Avalon’s long-awaited sand backpassing project is officially set to begin. Emergency repairs to the Avalon Boulevard bridge have now been completed by the County of Cape May, clearing the way for critical heavy equipment to reach the island.

On Monday, June 9, machinery will begin arriving via Avalon Boulevard throughout the day, with all equipment accessing the beach at 32nd Street. Residents and visitors should expect periodic delays and slow-moving eastbound traffic on Avalon Boulevard as equipment is brought in one piece at a time. Local police will assist with traffic coordination.

Key Details:

  • Beach Work Begins: Evening of Monday, June 9
  • Equipment Access Point: 32nd Street Beach
  • Work Schedule: Weeknights only, 10:00pm–8:00am
  • Beach Closures: Sections from 9th Street to south of the Fishing Pier will be closed overnight for safety
  • Reason for Project: Severe beach erosion along Avalon’s north end in advance of hurricane season

The Borough emphasizes that all equipment will be cleared from the beach by 8:00am each morning to allow for daily use. The overnight schedule is designed with public safety in mind, as the machinery required for sand transport is large and actively moving across the beach zone.
