Avalon's Beach Restoration Project

Avalon's Beach Restoration Project

Avalon's 2024 sand back passing project is set to begin with the aim to redistribute approximately 55,000 cubic yards of sand to the north end beaches, focusing on 9th-15th streets, that suffered erosion during the most recent winter events.

Residents and visitors of Avalon, please take note!

The 2024 Avalon sand back passing project has officially commenced. Led by The Yannuzzi Group, Inc., this significant project will address beach erosion by pulling sand from the 32nd to 40th street beaches, and placing it on the 9th-15th street beaches.

Sand back passing is scheduled to occur throughout the month of May with estimated completion in early June.

Here are some more details:

  • Schedule: The project will run weekdays through May from 7am-3:30pm, taking a break during Memorial Day weekend. It is estimated that the replenishment will be completed around the first or second week of June, depending on the weather.
  • Scope: Approximately 55,000 cubic yards of sand will be moved from between 32nd and 40th streets to fill the area between 9th and 15th streets, with particular attention to the area between 10th and 12th streets.
  • Safety: As heavy machinery will be in operation, certain beach paths and zones will be temporarily closed to ensure public safety.

Beach replenishment projects have occurred in the past, with the most recent in 2022, with the goal to fortify the north-end beaches before the official start of hurricane season, June 1.

The Borough of Avalon requests beachgoers to be aware that these beaches will be an active construction zone during the duration of this project, and to please avoid placing beach chairs in the truck traffic area.

Beachgoers are urged to avoid placing beach chairs in the truck traffic area during active construction times.
